Associate Master Director
Joey Minshall
Joey Minshall is a vocal arranger, writer, composer and certified music therapist. Her fun-to-sing a cappella vocal arrangements are known for their creativity, and have been performed and recorded by groups in Canada, the US, Sweden, Germany, England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Dubai, Saudi Arabia.
Joey has been part of the barbershop community and affiliated with Sweet Adelines International since 1974 as a successful quartet singer, chorus director, coach and arranger.
“I was very fortunate to grow up in a family that valued singing, and that sang together: ordinary, everyday singing: doing the dishes, riding in the car, hanging out, making up songs and creating harmonies.
I have come to believe through my life and my work, that one of the most powerful things that we human beings can do - to move towards each other, to connect with each other, to create community, to build strong relationships – is sing with each other.
Any time we human beings are singing with each other, we are actively engaged in making the world a better place"
That belief has led Joey to many satisfying musical involvements:
• Co-creator, with friend Mo Field (Stockholm, Sweden) of theharmonyrainbow, a yahoo discussion group for gays and lesbians in the barbershop community worldwide
• Director of the first Young Women in Harmony (YWIH) chorus on the Vancouver lower mainland, “Somethin’ Casual”, which introduced many young women to the fun of singing barbershop
• “Sounds of Christmas” a cappella chorus (2005)
• “Flying Solo”, a series of solo-singing sessions for women (2006)
• Founding director (1995 - 2008) of the a cappella mixed-voice community chorus, Soundscape
• Musical director of five productions with Applause! Musicals in Concert, including Nine, Dear World, 70 Girls 70, On the Twentieth Century and 50 Million Frenchmen (2002-2008)
• Co-facilitator on a 10-day “Tune-Up Cruise” between San Diego and several Mexian ports-of-call (2007)
Joey lives in Surrey BC with Yvonne Meyer, artist and graphic designer and her partner of 18 years. They have recently published a children’s book Simon LeDrew and are working on a second. Joey also organizes a sock-knitting project, Socks-on-Purpose, providing hand-knit socks for people in need.
